Canada Joins Australia, Bars Entry from Citizens of Ebola-Hit Countries

According to BBC News, Canada has suspended processing visa applications from residents of any country with widespread instances of Ebola transmission.

Despite having no confirmed cases of Ebola, Canada reportedly introduced the visa restrictions because “the introduction or spread of the disease would pose an imminent and severe risk to public health,” said the federal citizenship ministry.

Canada’s decision follows Australia’s travel bans against citizens of Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea. Canada’s visa suspension plan is less restrictive than Australia’s, though.

Unlike Australia’s plan, Canadian officials will still be able to grant visas on a case-by-case basis, and travel restrictions will not be imposed against Canadian citizens travelling from Ebola zones, according to a Canadian official cited by BBC News,.
