Four privately-owned daily newspapers will hit the presses in Burma Monday, after President Thein Sein lifted a restriction in December that allowed only publicly-owned papers to print daily. Thein Sein then allowed publications to apply for a permit, and if granted, would allow papers to begin publishing April 1. Sixteen papers applied for permits, including one by opposition leader and activist Aung Suu Kyi. Four have been granted the ability to publish daily.

The last privately-owned daily newspaper was published in 1960, before the country came under military rule.

While the country continues to lift censorship laws, including ones against private daily publishing, the Burmese government has also introduced conflicting restrictive legislation, like re-establishing a censorship panel.
