NSC Denies Thailand’s Role in U.S. Torture Amidst Calls from Activist Groups
After a recent study was released listing Thailand as one of the 54 countries that aided the United States in anti-terrorism efforts, which allegedly included torture tactics, human rights groups called on Thailand’s prime minister to investigate.
The country’s National Security Council responded today denying the accusation.

The Council’s security-general, Lt General Paradorn Pattanathabutr, said the report was “totally untrue.” Pattanathabutr also commented on the validity and motives behind the report, which was conducted by billionaire philanthropist George Soros’ Open Society Foundation. The report alleges that Thailand allowed the CIA access to safe houses where prisoners “were thrown against fake walls, forced into stressful physical functions, involuntarily stripped naked and slapped.” It also states that Thailand held secret detention sites for U.S. prisoners and used water-boarding on the detainees.
