United Nations leaders are proposing a treaty to restrict firearms worldwide. In March, the UN General Assembly will gather in New York City to review and negotiate a renrewal of the global Arms Trade Treaty (ATT). The Arms Trade Treaty regulates the international trade of conventional firearms. The renewal of the treaty was initially deliberated on in July, but the upcoming U.S. elections delayed talks.

Over 50 U.S. Senators and 130 congressional representatives have urged the President not to sign off on any treaty that infringes on a constitutional amendment. Recently, gun regulation has been a divisive issue in the US. On Wednesday, President Obama issued over 23 executive orders involving gun confiscation or restrictions. Congressman Diane Feinstein also is proposing legislation to limit gun ownership, causing strident outcry from gun rights proponents like the National Rifle Association (NRA)  and Gun Owners of America (GOA), as well as citizens claiming it’s an infringement on their Second Amendment rights.
