U.S Admits that Cannabis Kills Cancer Cells

Drug also shown to reduce risk of colon cancer

The National Cancer Institute under the U.S Department of Health has added a new page to its cancer advice website stating that cannabis and cannabiniods can be used to alleviate the side effects of cancer and can also be used in cancer treatment.

The page suggests using cannabis by eating baked products laced with cannabis, drinking it as herbal tea, smoking or spraying it under the tongue.

The site includes a preclinical study on mice that showed “cannabinoids may inhibit tumor growth by causing cell death, blocking cell growth, and blocking the development of blood vessels needed by tumors to grow. Laboratory and animal studies have shown that cannabinoids may be able to kill cancer cells while protecting normal cells”.

Studies also showed that administration of cannabis reduced inflammation of the colon in mice and may have potential to reduce risk of colon cancer.

Other uses of the drug include anti-inflammatory activity, pain relief, antiviral activity and relieving muscle spasms caused by multiple sclerosis.

Currently, 25 states and the District of Columbia in the U.S have legalized use of marijuana in some form.
