Hot! Thailand, Laos Ties Even Stronger

With an increase of airports, roads, railways, and dams Laos and Thailand ties have become even stronger. Even Vientiane is beginning to break off from Vietnam and make independent decisions.

One area of interest is the $3.8 billion Xayaburi Dam being constructed by Thai companies that reports say could risk food security by upsetting the spawning season of fish stock that feed people along the river in Cambodia and Vietnam.

Thai and Laos companies intend to split the profits by selling electricity produced from the dam back into Thailand. There are also plans for a high speed train from Bangkok to Nong Khai.

At the recent summit of foreign minister of the Association of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN), both Laos and Thailand stepped back when Vietnam asked for support in the South China Sea disputes. This comes as a surprise as Vietnam has been a financial benefactor to Laos while also providing the government with support and diplomatic leverage on the international political stage.
