Sweden Makes ‘Historic Move,’ Officially Recognizes Palestine
The Swedish government recognized Palestine as a state in an official announcement on Thursday, October 30, becoming the first West-European EU state to do so, reports RT.
“By making our decision we want to bring a new dynamic to the stalled peace process,” stated Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom according to RT. “Today’s recognition is a contribution to a better future for a region that has for too long been characterized by frozen negotiations, destruction and frustration.”
The Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas welcomed the “historic” move. Conversely, Israel called it a “deplorable decision,” and recalled its ambassador in Sweden for “consultations in protest of the move,” according to RT.
