Should Castration be a Punishment for Sexual Offenders? Turkey Law Professor Weighs In
A 20-year-old student was killed in Turkey after an attempted rape, sparking a debate in the country over reintroducing harsher punishments for sex crime offenders including the death penalty and castration, reports EuroNews.
EuroNews spoke with Ahmet Caner Yenidünya, a Criminal Law Professor in Turkey, about the increasing international public awareness of violence against women on this year’s International Women’s Day.
Yenidünya said that legally surgical castration could not be condoned because it is not a “humanistic act,” but that chemical castration via hormonal treatment was an “appropriate treatment” for perpetuators with existing psychological disorders.
