Pro GMO Law Advances, Overriding What Most Americans Want
In opposition to the cry of many an American who want GMO labeling to be a legal requirement, a Senate committee has progressed legislation that will block states from requiring foods containing GMO’s to be labeled.
In what has been dubbed the DARK Act (Denying Americans the Right to Know), it now moves to the upper chambers floor. The official name is the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2015.
Polls show that 90% of Americans would like food packaging to state whether there are GMO ingredients present.
Wenonah Hauter, executive director of watchdog Food & Water Watch, explains:
“Blocking state laws that require GMO labeling will strip away the ability of states to protect the public’s right to know what is in their food […] Any version of this bill that would result in anything less than mandatory on-package labeling is unacceptable.”
