Police State News: Fear Over New Philippine Internet Law
NY Times | A new Internet law in the Philippines could lead to imprisonment for activities such as sharing Facebook and Twitter posts, critics said.
The law, the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, sets penalties for several computer-related crimes, including child pornography, identity theft, online fraud, and illegally accessing computer networks.
The concern is over provisions related to libel, which is a criminal offense in the Philippines that can lead to jail time.
Much of the general public has been opposed to the new law with Facebook user replacing their profile pictures with black silhouettes and bloggers creating blank posts in protestation.
Thailand does not have such strict restrictions on social media outlets such as Twitter and Facebook, however, the Thai Penal Code does outlaw pornography on the internet.
