Phillippines Supreme Court Upholds Birth Control Law
The Supreme Court in the Philippines has held upheld the legality of a controversial new birth control bill despite strong opposition from the Catholic Church reports Abs-CBN News.
The Court found that found the Reproductive Health Law did not significantly violate the Philippines Constitution although in an earlier decision the High Court partially granted the petition of the pro-life advocates by declaring several provisions of the highly divisive Reproductive Health (RH) Law unconstitutional.

The law requires the government to provide free contraception to the poorest Filipinos, and to provide safe sex education in schools.
Supporters say the law is necessary to stem population growth, reduce maternal death rates and help avoid unwanted pregnancies among poor women. Proponents of the reproductive law also argued the law would help prevent HIV-AIDS.
