The case is considered important due to the skills of experts in computer forensics who were able to undo the swirl effect Neil had used to hide his identity in his videos showing him having sex with young boys in Southeast Asia. Neil was also well known for his seeming lack of guilt or remorse and what appeared to be a twisted pride in his videos chronicling his deviant sexual mis-adventures. On the basis of the computer forensic experts’ work, Neil as identified and arrested in Bangkok in 2007 and subsequently extradited to Canada.
Canadian criminal law gives Canadian authorities the power to investigate and prosecute certain offences, such as child pornography and the victimization of children, committed by Canadian citizens in other countries.
Before his arrest overseas, the Neil worked as a teacher in several parts of Asia dating back to 2000.
