NYPD Using Facebook, Instagram for Surveillance
New York City police are now using social media sites like Facebook and Instagram to identify criminals, DNAInfo.com reports. Police use facial recognition software to search for and identify suspects’ photos on the social media platforms. Using an original source photo like a mug shot or surveillance camera shot, the police run the image through the software and then track similar photos on the sites.

The NYPD has already admitted to using social media for surveillance purposes. The high-tech software is the newest addition to the NYPD’s arsenal that already includes “DNA databases, radiological detectors and sophisticated license plate readers.”
