Judge Strikes Down Appeal, Gay Sex Still Illegal in Singapore
According to AsiaOne, the Singapore Court of Appeal upheld a law criminalizing sex between men in October after hearing two separate cases challenging the law.
Under Section 377A of the Penal Code, acts of “gross indecency” between men are punishable by up to two years imprisonment. The appellants, reportedly a gay couple and a man accused of gay acts, claimed that Section 377A violated their rights to equality, life, and personal liberty under the Constitution, reports AsiaOne.
According to AsiaOne, lawyers for the defendants had previously argued “that the law was initially enacted in 1938 to suppress male prostitution, and was not intended to criminalize private, consensual conduct between adult men.”
