Immigration Program Brings in Numerous Document Requests
Fox News Latino | After President Obama’s announcement about a new program allowing young people living in the country illegally to apply for two-year renewable work permits the requests have been pouring in.
Up to 1.7 million people may qualify but many are finding they may have to wait longer than expected. The Obama administration said the first 29 applications have been approved among more than 82,000 received since it began.
In Los Angeles, the Mexican consulate issued 17,444 passports and consular identification cards in August, up 63 per cent from the same period last year. The government also reassured employers who were nervous about providing evidence that they hired an undocumented worker stating documents will no be used against them unless they committed “egregious violations of criminal or widespread abuses.”
U.S. immigration lawyers in Thailand note that the amnesty law applies to any nationality meeting the qualifications, including Thai illegal aliens in the States. However, the number of Thai persons qualifying is miniscule compared to the number of Mexican nationals.
