Hot! Iceland Becomes the First Country in the World to Legalize Equal Pay

In Iceland, it is now illegal to pay men more than women. If a company employs more than 25 people they must have a government certificate showing equal pay. The new law was implemented on new years day 2018.

The policy aims to abolish Iceland’s gender pay gap by 2022 and has been ranked number one in the world in terms of gender equality. A spokeswoman for the Icelandic Women’s Rights Association said that the legislation is “a mechanism to ensure women and men are being paid equally” by evaluating every job that is being done and acquiring a certificate for confirmation of equal pay.

Before the new policy there was merely legislation that called for equal pay between men and women, however, there was still a pay gap. Women’s Day 2017 saw decades of campaigning and raising awareness come to the point where the old legislation was not effective enough and needed to be more aggressive.
