Fingerprint and Face Scans to be Mandatory for SIM Card Purchase in Thailand
The Thai government are implementing mandatory fingerprint and face scans of those who buy SIM cards from next month, Research Snipers reports.
According to the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), this is a measure to increase security of mobile banking and online payments.
“Our money is linked to our mobile phone services because we are living in a digital age”, said Secretary-General Takorn Tantasinth. “The trust in mobile banking will be improved by taking this step”, he added.
It’s also part of a wider crackdown on mobile banking fraud, which was triggered by a case involving two Chinese men who purchases 400,000 SIM cards for an illegal ‘click farm’ operation.
The system will be implemented on December 15th, 2017.
