Defamation Court Case Due To Begin Today
A criminal defamation case against two journalists in Thailand, including an Australian, is set to begin today, despite calls from the United Nations for the charges to be dropped.
The Thai Navy have lodged a complaint against journalists Alan Morison and Chutima Sidasathian regarding an article they wrote which quoted an investigation by the Reuters news agency, which said some members of the military were involved in trafficking Muslim Rohingya asylum seekers who had fled Myanmar explains Yahoo News.
Under Thailand law, defamation can be both a civil and a criminal matter. If convicted, the pair could face up to two years’ imprisonment for defamation and five years for breaching the Computer Crimes Act, as well as a fine of up to 10,000 baht.
