Colorado Legalizes Civil Unions
Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper sign civil unions for gay couples into law on Friday. Colorado now joins eight other states who have similar civil union laws. Civil unions give gay couples similar right as those who are married, including enhanced inheritance and parental rights. Couples also have the ability to make medical decisions for their partners.
Colorado voters banned same-sex marriages in 2006.
The law will go into effect May 1.
