Washington Police Desensitizing Drug-Sniffing Dogs

by Admin on March 22, 2013

Now that recreational marijuana is legal in the state of Washington, marijuana-sniffing police dogs are out of a job, right?

Not so much.

Police in some areas of the state are no longer going to be training the dogs to sniff marijuana. In fact, they’ll be desensitizing the dogs to the scent.

According to KOMO, the Washington Association of Prosecuting Attorneys sent out a memo advising the state’s law-enforcement agencies to discontinue training to alert narcotics dogs around marijuana. In addition, marijuana was removed from the state’s dog training performance test.

A dog’s alert will no longer be enough for an officer to use a search warrant for probably cause, the memo states.

Washington State Patrol spokesperson Bob Caulkins said his department will be “more specific in its search-warrant affidavits in the future.”

Some law enforcement agencies across the state, however, will not be desensitizing dogs to the scent or no longer training them to alert. This is because the recreational use of marijuana is still illegal under federal law.
