Video Games Lead to Bizarre Divorce Petition in China

by Admin on May 30, 2013

In China, a woman attempted to divorce her husband as she grew tired of his love of video games. Guangdong.com reports that college sweethearts, Zhang Ping and Wang Juan, were married in 2011 and initially lived in marital bliss. Then things started to change.

According to Wang, Zhang became lazy and started playing video games. Whenever she asked for his help with anything, his reply was negative and she explained that his favorite excuse was: “I work all day, my work is boring, I need to relax. Video games excite me, it helps me relax”.

As tensions and arguments increased, Wang decided to petition the courts for a divorce, citing Zhang’s lack of responsibility, and selfish attitude as the main reason.

At the court hearing, Zhang said he didn’t agree with his wife’s petition and wanted to work things out. The courts also didn’t agree and the judge asked the two to try and work things out. Wang agreed to drop the lawsuit against her husband.

This certainly ranks up there with one of the most different and bizarre reasons to request a divorce. In Nigeria a woman divorced her husband because he talked too much and liked to share family secrets – she claimed in court any trust had left their relationship over his inability to keep his mouth shut. In Israel, one man divorced his wife after she brought 550 cats home claiming they ruined his home life by blocking the entrance to the bathroom, and stalking him at mealtime by stealing his food off the table.

In Thailand if the divorce is mutually requested, the proceedings tend to be relatively simple. However if one of the parties is unwilling or unable to participate in the proceedings, the legal process of filing for a divorce can be more complicated.

One of the following grounds must be asserted:

* A 3 year period of separation

* One spouse has deserted the other for over one year

* The husband has taken another woman as his wife

* The wife has committed adultery

* One spouse is guilty of misconduct (criminal or otherwise)

* One spouse has been imprisoned for more than one year

* One spouse has physically or mentally harmed the other

* Lack of marital support

* One spouse has had incurable insanity for at least 3 years

* One spouse has broken the bond of good behavior

* One spouse has an incurable communicable disease

* One spouse has a physical disability so as to be unable to cohabit as husband and wife.

Accordingly, excessive video game playing would not be an acceptable ground for a divorce in Thailand.
