Vermont GMO Labeling Law Sees Food Giants Scrambling to Comply

by Admin on March 30, 2016

Vermont may be small, but it’s leading the way for GMO labeling.

Two years ago the state passed legislation requiring mandatory labeling. Now, food industry giants face a July 1st deadline to comply with the new GMO labeling laws in Vermont, or they will not be able to legally sell their products in the state.

Given that food companies can’t create Vermont-specific labeling, it seems that the tiny state has created a nationwide labeling standard.

A statement from General Mills’ Jeff Harmening explains:

“Vermont state law requires us to start labeling certain grocery store food packages that contain GMO ingredients or face significant fines […] We can’t label our products for only one state without significantly driving up costs for our consumers and we simply will not do that.”

In 2015 a poll showed that two thirds of Americans supported GMO labeling; however there are many who are less than impressed.

In Thailand, the latter end of 2015 saw a GMO bill being considered by the Thai government that would regulate the use of GMO farming in the kingdom. The bill was ultimately rejected.
