Iran described as “unacceptable” the decision by the United States to deny a visa to Tehran’s newly appointed UN ambassador, Hamid Aboutalebi, over his alleged links to the 1979 US hostage crisis as unacceptable according to Yahoo News.

He has previously served as ambassador to the European Union, Belgium, Italy and Australia.

As the host government, the United States will generally issue visas to diplomats who serve at UN headquarters, but State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki has said that there were “limited exceptions, including “security, terrorism and foreign policy concerns.

She refused to discuss the specifics of Aboutalebi’s case however, and whether he had submitted a visa request or not, citing privacy concerns.

In the past several Thai politicians have also had issues receiving visa from America, including Chuwit Kamolvisit according to this story with Scoop. The Nation also confirmed that Thaksin Shinawatra has had issues previously trying to secure a US visa, but eventually a US visa was issued him.
