In a landmark move, the Scottish Episcopal Church has voted to legalize same sex marriage making it the first ever Anglican Church in the UK to do so reports Independent.

The head of the church has called it a “momentous step” towards acceptance of the LGBT community. Gay couples can now ask to be married in a Scottish Anglican Church.

“By removing gender from our marriage canon, our church now affirms, as its official position, that same-sex couples are not just married, but are married in the sight of God,” Rev David Chilingworth, head of the Scottish Episcopal Church.

Clergy will choose whether to “opt-in” or “opt-out” of officiating gay weddings depending upon their moral beliefs.

The decision has been celebrated by the LGBT community. Stonewall Scotland, the Scottish branch of the LGBT charity, wrote on Twitter: “We’re delighted that the Scottish Episcopal Church has voted to allow same-sex couples to marry. This will mean a lot to so many couples!”
