UK Amends Smoking Law

The law is aimed at discouraging youths from taking up the habit

UK has introduced new smoking regulations with the hope that it will deter young people from picking up the habit.

According to Independent, the new laws, which will go into effect May 21st, will make it illegal for cigarette manufacturers to produce 10 packs. 10g and 20g cigarettes will also be banned with 30g being the new minimum and all fruity flavored cigarettes will be banned from production.

Menthols will be gradually phased out with availability expected to decline by 2020.

Cigarettes will now be more expensive to obtain with the cheapest packs costing an average of £8.82. The court has dismissed an effort to appeal the regulations by the industry, giving them until the end of the year to phase out production.
