U.S Sweeping Immigration Bill Passes Committee

The bill is supported only by Republicans

A sweeping immigration bill was approved by the House Judicial Committee by all Republican members despite strong opposition from Democrats.

Among the measures which include cracking down on sanctuary cities and tightening visa security, HR 2431 would criminalize undocumented immigrants instead of fining them with a civil violation as current U.S immigration law dictates. If passed, Democrat Rep. Jerrold Nadler said that the law would automatically “turn millions of Americans into criminals overnight.”

“Being alive would be a misdemeanor,” Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-San Jose said in an interview. “I can’t recall an immigration bill that was more extreme.”

However, supporters claim that the bill is necessary to help immigration officers enforce the law.

The bill was sponsored by Rep. Raúl Labrador, R-Idaho and has been named after two Sacramento police officers, Danny Oliver and Michael Davis Jr. who were fatally shot by an undocumented immigrant in 2014.

In a statement, Labrador said that the “Act is a first and necessary step to modernize a broken immigration system.” “We need to give law enforcement at all levels the tools and resources they need to keep America safe and secure.”

The new immigration policy is part of Trump’s campaign promise to crack down on immigration problems in the country.
