The 22 year old is in a state of coma
North Korea announced the release of 22 year old American student Otto Warmbier on “humanitarian” grounds reports BBC.
Warmbier was arrested on 2 January 2016 during a tour of North Korea for allegedly stealing a propaganda sign from a hotel. He was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor and was allowed no contact with his family.
Soon after his sentencing he is said to have fallen ill and has been in a coma ever since. His release came immediately after a court ruling on 13 June according to North Korea’s KCNA state news agency.
His parents believe that he was “brutalised and terrorised by the pariah regime” in North Korea. Many believe that his confession “to harm the motivation and work ethic of the Korean people” was coerced.
