U.S. Patent Office Denies “Redskins”

The U.S. Patent Office has denied a trademark to “Redskins Hog Rinds” on the grounds that the name is a “derogatory slang,” which bodes poorly for the Washington Redskins’ ongoing legal battle over their name reports Time.

The U.S. Patent Office explained that the name includes content “which may disparage or bring into contempt or disrepute persons, institutions, beliefs, or national symbols.”

The decision is not good news for the Washington Redskins as the same office will be deciding whether to revoke the trademark on the NFL team’s controversial name. Many view the name “Redskins” as being a racial slur.
