Twitter Accused of Spying on Users

Twitter is facing a class action lawsuit over claims it allegedly spies on users’ private messages, and at times even alters the wording, RT reports.

The complaint, filed in San Francisco by Wilford Raney states:

“Twitter surreptitiously eavesdrops on its users’ private Direct Message communications. As soon as a user sends a Direct Message, Twitter intercepts, reads, and, at times, even alters the message.”

The suit revolves around the social media giants’ custom shortening of URL links. So, if a person sends a link to someone via direct message, Twitters algorithm shortens the link. The change is not visible to the two users, however the suit argues that this action is illegally benefits Twitter by showing the linked-to company that they are the source of the traffic.

This violates the Electronic Communications Privacy Act and California’s privacy laws.

It essentially acts as a middleman, and while doing so records data regarding where people are going to and coming from.

The lawsuit states:

“The end result is that Twitter can negotiate better advertising rates.”

In other social media news, Facebook is also at the receiving end of a lawsuit over alleged privacy infractions.
