TSA To Search Boston Public Transport Passengers

The LA Times reports that the TSA will begin warrant-less  searches of all passengers of Boston’s buses and subways. Those who do not agree to being searched will be asked to leave the area.

The move highlights that Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is no longer  limited to just airports anymore. TSA teams are increasingly conducting searches and screenings at train stations, subways, ferry terminals and other mass transit locations around the US.

“It’s a great way to make the public think you are doing something,” said Fred H. Cate, a professor at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law, who writes about privacy and security. “It’s a little like saying, ‘If we start throwing things up in the air, will they hit terrorists?’ ”
