President Donald Trump has instructed his top cabinet members to come up with ways to place further immigration restrictions on countries with high rates of visa overstays.
It’s not clear exactly how the Trump Administration plans to fight the tourist or visitor visa overstay battle with these certain countries, but options reportedly being explored include temporary legal immigration suspensions.
The move is meant to curb visa overstays from countries with rates of overstay higher than 10 percent. This includes 20 countries, mostly from Africa.
Immigrant rights advocates argue that if Trump does institute a policy punishing those countries with high overstay rates, it could severely hamper legal immigration for people in those countries who need it and choose to go down the legal path.
On top of that, US immigration law already punishes those who overstay tourist or visitor visas with bans of up to 10 years.
In 2018, Thailand had a 2.17 percent visa overstay rate.
