The trial of a Thai construction magnate accused of poaching a rare black panther earlier this year in a begun this week.
The Premchai Karnasuta, the CEO of one of Thailand’s leading property development companies, sparked nationwide outrage after he was allegedly caught by police hunting protected animals in a Thailand wildlife sanctuary.
Premchai was found with weapons and several animal carcasses, including that of an endangered black panther.
The fact that the trial is moving forward is seen as a huge win by many ordinary Thais who initially assumed that the business mogul would get off scot-free.
According to Thailand criminal defense lawyers, it’s extremely common in Thailand for people with exorbitant amounts of money and power to get away with crimes or to even stand trial at all in the first place.
