Trembling for our Country this Holiday Season

by Admin on December 23, 2011

Planning on a trip home to visit family within the next few days? Traveling might be a little more complicated after the passage of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for 2012. In addition to long delays, crowded airports, invasive TSA pat downs, and long lines, now you might encounter arbitrary arrest without trial and indefinite military detention.

The USA isn’t the only country whose military is expected to take a more active role in holiday merriment. In Thailand, the country’s military has been called on to keep the peace during New Years festivities in downtownBangkok. To the relief of  Thailand lawyers, no Thai laws curtail the rights of the country’s citzens to the extent of the NDAA, though there are many state of emergency laws. We’re reminded of the following quote:

I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that his justice cannot sleep forever.

            -Thomas Jefferson
