A law requiring trans people to be sterilized before being able to officially change their gender on government records has been rejected by the Finnish government, Care2 reports.
The Act on Legal Recognition of the Gender of Transsexuals defines the process for trans people to go through in order to get approval for an official gender change, including sterilization and mental health screening. LGBT rights groups have protested the law, saying it infringes on human rights.

Government officials announced that no changes would be made to the law. An official notice read “The abolition of the Infertility requirement is not included in the current Government’s legislative plan”.
Finland is one of twenty countries with sterilization requirements for trans people, including turkey, Romania and Belgium.
