2017 has seen a record breaking homicide total of 25 transgender people in the US, The Time accounts for more than 100 trans people murdered in the past five years. The reasons behind these homicides can be linked to hate crimes and discrimination against transgender people.
A human rights campaign addresses that the majority of states in the US do not have laws to protect transgender people. The discrimination against these people is deep rooted in most walks of life including government, schools, health care and employment. The intolerance leads to many transgender people living in high rates of poverty succumbing to the dangerous underground world of sex work and drugs.
The U.S Justice Department acknowledges that transgender people are not protected from workplace discrimination under federal law and will give out “guidance on protecting religious freedom” that will aid in safeguarding LGBT people.
