Personal injury in Thailand is one thing but death while abroad in Asia is another. In the past few years Thailand has witnessed several tourists deaths, of which some are still a mystery.
This year, two sisters from Quebec were found dead in their hotel room at the Phi Phi Palm Residence on Phi Phi Island. According to the Montreal Gazette, this is similar to an incident on Phi Phi Island in 2009 when two women from the US and Norway died after becoming ill at a guesthouse. However, two other people with the many symptoms of stomach pains and vomiting survived.
Another mysterious death case in Thailand involved several tourists from different countries. The victims had been staying at the same hotel in Chiang Mai. The Bangkok Post reported that an autopsy revealed a Coxsackie B virus in a New Zealand tourist’s body. However, the Disease Control Department said the virus may not have been the cause of the other deaths.
According to the Bangkok Post four of the people stayed in the same hotel and in another incident two foreign tourists and a Thai tour guide were found dead at the hotel.
Many of the cases had signs of food poisoning with vomiting and stomach cramps. Some have suspected foul play in these Thailand deaths but police have ruled this out. One theory is that the virus was obtained from eating contaminated food.
According to Jiraporm Thongpunding, a personal injury lawyer, in order to file a claim in Thai courts, the cause of death would normally need to be determined. Without a cause of death, it is difficult to establish any wrong doings.
Some experts believe the Coxsackie B virus seems to be a likely candidate for the deaths as it can pass from human to human and causes stomach upsets and in some cases heart damage and death. However, the virus is not common in Thailand.
