Over 6000 tigers are caged in these farms
There are as many as 200 legal tiger farms in China that house over 6000 tigers reports Eco Watch. The tigers are killed for medicinal purposes and as home décor.
In order to avoid an outcry from animals’ rights groups, the trade “hides behind carefully-worded agreements and pretensions of conservation.”
According to the report, an estimated 60% of China’s 1.4 billion population use medicines made from tiger bones, rhinoceros horn and other parts of exotic animals.

Although the trade of tiger parts illegal in China under the 1988 wildlife law, it did not supplant another wildlife protection law that allows for the farming and consumption of tigers and other endangered species. However, instead of protecting the tigers, these farms promote demand for tiger parts that in turn promote poaching.
This issue will be discussed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) meeting in Johannesburg this week.
