Government Eases Requirements for Third Genders in Scotland

Plans for a less invasive procedure to legally recognize transgender people in Scotland have been put in motion by the UK government, reports The Guardian. No longer will they have to undergo humiliating and psychiatric examinations after they have transitioned.

A new self-declaration scheme modeled after the Republic of Ireland will dedicate a specialist government unit that will oversee trans people signing simple application forms and declaring before a legal official to live out the rest of their life as a non binary gender.

Scottish women’s organizations such as Rape Crisis and Engender have pledged to work with trans people to establish appropriately designed systems. Plans for consultation on gender recognition legislation are due in July of next year.
