The Super Bowl: U.S.’s Largest Human Trafficking Event

by Admin on February 5, 2013

It’s an issue you wouldn’t immediately equate with the United State’s largest sporting event. The Super Bowl has been dubbed the single largest human trafficking event in the United States, according to the Huffington Post. Texas Attorney General George Abbott, whose state hosted the Super Bowl last year, said the event draws a large number of men looking to pay for sex.

Forbes reports that during the 2010 Super Bowl in Miami, 10,000 prostitutes were brought in. During the 2011 Super Bowl in Dallas, 133 underage arrests for prostitution were made. In addition, “prostitution of minors is considered trafficking under federal law.”

Even though New Orleans significantly beefed up its security for the event, human trafficking will likely still be a problem. Two days before the event, five women were rescued and eight human-trafficking related arrests were made in New Orleans, according to FOX 8.

In Thailand, human trafficking is unfortunately much more common. Prostitution ring arrests are commonly made. US immigration lawyers are often brought in to handle such cases.
