Thailand’s Cannabis Rebirth: Important Facts

Thailand has made international news by becoming Asia’s first country to decriminalize  cannabis. On June 9. 2022 the health authority on Thursday excluded cannabis from a list of illegal narcotics, allowing Thai people a way to cultivate and use the popular weed at home.

Although there is much fanfare about the change, in reality those who smoke it in public are subject to fines of up to 25,000 baht and/or imprisonment of up to three months.Additionally illegal importation and the production sale and or use of cannabis concentrates, such as hashish, remain illegal in the Land of Smiles. 

Since removing cannabis as an illegal narcotic, Thai people  can grow cannabis provided that they register with the government.

Commercial growers growers, including companies, are required however to obtain licenses from the Food and Drug Authority.

Restaurants and food and beverage vendors an serve THC-infused food and drinks, though the THC level must be less than 0.2%.
