The aim of the law is to “stop drunk drivers from getting behind the wheel”Bangkok Expressway by Mark Fischer
In an attempt to crack down on the amount of deaths and accidents caused by drunk driving, the Thai government is reportedly enforcing a new law that will punish not only the drunk driver but also the drunk driver’s family reports the Phuket Gazette.
The proposed law comes after a recent report released by the World Health Organization on road accident fatalities found Thailand to be the country with the second highest death tolls resulting from drunk driving. The law will impose stricter punishments for the driver and will require the offenders’ immediate families to pay punitive fines.
Phuket Land Transport Office Chief Sommai Sudkhao, was quoted as saying by the Gazzete, “ The idea behind this legislation is to punish the parents of teens who drink and drive. That will incentivize parents and other family members to stop the drunk drivers from getting behind the wheel.”
According to Thailand attorney Jiraporn Thongphong at Chaninat & Leeds, the “parents in Thailand already have legal responsibility for children under 20. However, the new law is unusual because criminal law usually requires specific intent to commit a crime.”
