Thailand’s tobacco control law was passed on Friday raising the minimum age to legally buy cigarettes from 18 to 20 and banning the sale of individual cigarettes.
The amendment to the Tobacco Control Act was unanimously passed by the cabinet.
According to Bangkok Post, “The bill is aimed at better control of tobacco products and protecting people’s health in line with Thailand’s adoption of the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.” The bill stresses on protecting public health particularly the younger generation.

The new law prohibits the sale of cigarettes to individuals below the age of 20. Anyone found violating the law will face a prison sentence of up to 3 months or a fine of 30,000 baht.
The law also bans the production of packs containing less than 20 cigarettes and any violation will result in a fine of 300,000 baht. Sale of individual cigarettes will incur a fine a 40,000 baht.
