Thailand Officials Target Illegal Land Deed Offenders in Phuket

This month in Thailand, government officials committed to take back land in Phuket’s Sirinat National Park that has been encroached for decades through illegal use of land title documents, according to the Bangkok Post.

Newly appointed head of the Department of National Parks, Nipon Chotiban, announced the launch of the “campaign” in a press conference last week. Chotiban pledged to recover up to 370 allegedly encroached land plots, which compose 2,700 rai (roughly 1,092 acres).

Offenders have accomplished the illegal development of public lands by misusing Sor Kor 1 land title documents. Because Thai land law forbids private deeds on public lands, several hoteliers and real estate tycoons will likely be charged.

At least two local Phuket government offices are also suspected in the corruption, according to the Bangkok Post: the Sirinat Park Office and Provincial Land Office. Officials disagree about who exactly is to blame.
