Film and recording industries in London, New York, and Los Angeles should take note: their studios may soon be receiving competition from an unexpected quarter. Thailand’s recording industry offers artists state-of-the-art facilities, beautiful locations, and competitive prices; at least one foreign band, Britain-based Enter Shikari, has already taken advantage of the experience.
Enter Shikari’s newest album “A Flash Flood of Color”, due to be released in January 2012, seems appropriately titled given that the album was recorded in the beautiful country of Thailand. Allegedly, the recording studio that the group utilized was actually part of an all-inclusive recording complex, complete with hotel rooms, dining options, and a swimming pool.Thailand has arguably perfected the all-inclusive resort industry; can we expect to see a boom in the construction of luxury recording and film studios soon?
The role of foreign investment in entertainment-centered ventures is another point for consideration. The Thailand Board of Investment (BIO) offers tempting promotions to foreign manufactures interested in setting up factories in Thailand. Honda, Canon, Mitsubishi, and a variety of other foreign-based manufactures have been lured to Thailand by the BIO’s incentives of tax exemptions on import duties, work permits, and waivers allowing foreign nationals to bring additional foreign workers into Thailand. For foreign record labels or production companies, investing in entertainment-related venture in Thailand under Thailand BIO laws could result in serious economic benefits.
Thailand has long been the focus of the entertainment industry as a setting for films (the Hangover 2 being the most recent example). Perhaps it’s time for Thailand to cash in on the entertainment world from the other side of the camera.
