Abortion can be carried out in pregnancies of up to 24 weeks
Thailand is going to relax its strict abortion regulations for pregnant women infected with the Zika virus reports The Nation.
The deadline for the procedure is now set to extend to 24 weeks in case ultrasound imaging indicates birth defects.
Pisek Lumpikanon, president of the Royal Thai College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, told Reuters, “The difficulty with Zika is to determine microcephaly. It is usually found later in pregnancy.”

Pregnant women who suffer Zika-like symptoms such as skin rashes, eye inflammations or mild fever are required to undergo urine and blood tests and if they are found positive for the virus, they will be referred to a health specialist.
The virus is commonly spread by mosquitoes. However, transmission via sexual intercourse is also possible.
Dr. Tawee Chotpitayasunond, a specialist at the Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health said that Thailand was the first Asian country to come up with Zika guidelines for expecting mothers.
