After a series of recent accidents involving tourists in Thailand, the Thai Tourism Department is contemplating passing new countrywide safety regulations.

Chinese tourists, who make up nearly a third of Thailand’s yearly tourists, are particularly more hesitant in traveling to Thailand after the recent boat accident in Phuket that led to the death of 47 Chinese visitors.

Tourism officials estimate that Chinese tourism will drop by 11.5 percent in Thailand.

Anan Wongbenjarat, director-general of the Thai Tourism Department noted that many foreigners are opting to travel to other countries instead, due to recent news stories of tourist deaths.

The problem that tourists have when experiencing an accident or injury in Thailand is that enforcing their legal rights in a foreign court system is usually expensive and inconvenient, according to Thailand attorneys.

Introducing a new law to provide more stringent safety standards and enforcing it to ensure tourists travel in the country with peace of mind is the department’s number one priority.
