All school students will be made to use bathrooms according to the gender on their birth certificates
Texas is set to pass a transgender bathroom law much to the disapproval of civil rights groups.
The bill is sponsored by Republican Rep. Chris Paddie and under it students at public and charter schools will be unable to use the bathrooms of their choice but will have to use ones according to the gender on their birth certificates.
Paddie said that the bill had “absolutely no intent” to discriminate but is meant for “child safety”. “This is about accommodating all kids,” he said.
The House approved the bill on Monday 91-50 and will be sent to the Senate, where should it pass, will be sent to Gov. Greg Abbott for consideration.
Several LGBT and civil rights groups have criticized the bill including El Paso Democrat Rep. Joe Moody. “This amendment is the bathroom bill and the bathroom bill is an attack on transgender people. Some people don’t want to admit that because they are ashamed, and this is shameful,” he is quoted by ABC news as saying.
If Texas passes the bill, reports of boycotts by businesses may ensue. However, Greg Abbott has voiced his support for the bill.
