According to LA Times, Texas federal judge temporarily blocked Senate Bill 4, a new law that would put a stop to sanctuary cities in the state. This comes just before the law was set to take effect this week.
Senate Bill 4, which was signed back in May, was created to aid the detainment of illegal immigrants. If implemented, it will force police officers to crack down on persons suspected of violating US immigration law by detaining people who are suspected to be in the country illegally. They’ll also be required to question people they arrest about their immigration status. This includes those who have committed minor offences, such as traffic violations. Officers who fail to comply face punishments in the form of a fine or a jail term of up to a year.

There has been much criticism of this bill, with opponents saying that it amounts to racial profiling and will deter people from seeking assistance from the police when they need it, especially during the disaster of Hurricane Harvey.
U.S District Judge Orlando Garcia agreed, stating that the bill will ‘erode public trust and make many communities and neighborhoods less safe’. He added that it violates people’s constitutional rights. Republican Governor Greg Abbott is planning to appeal the judge’s decision immediately.
