Swedish Prime Minister Backs Sexual Consent Law

The new law will be able to prosecute more sexual assault cases if the victim has not clearly verbalized or demonstrated consent to sexual activity. The current law only covers rape if threats or violence were involved however the proposed amendments will be able to classify rape regardless of threats.

Policy change follows the Harvey Weinstein sex scandals where the movement of allegations against powerful men had also reached industries in Sweden. PM Stefan Lofven, comments that “sex should be voluntary. If it is not voluntary, then it is illegal.”
