In 2017, the EU Court of Human Rights ruled forced sterilization for Trans gender recognition a violation of human rights. The Swedish government then introduced a bill where Trans people affected by the law that was abolished in 2013 would be compensated with $25,000.
An LGBTQ spokesperson praised the bill saying it can never “undo the harm of unwillingly losing your reproductive abilities” but is a step in the right direction in terms of making amends with those affected. Before the bill was introduced, 5 million protestors, including 150 Trans people who were sterilized because of the regulation had banned together for compensation from the government.
Sweden is not the only country who had a forced sterilization law for Trans people, up to 16 countries in Europe still currently hold this regulation. The law in question requires Trans people to be “lacking the ability to procreate”.
